Theme Zechariah 9

Christ Jesus.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, the day will come when we, Your people, will never again have to worry about invading enemies (v. 8).

Something to think about

We will not have to worry because the Lord will keep watch over us (v. 8). Verse 9 was fulfilled when Christ came into Jerusalem riding on a donkey (see Matthew 21:1-11).  Verse 10 will be fulfilled when Christ returns.  Verses 14-17 says that all Israel, north and south, will one day be reunited.

Something to experience

One day Christ will return for His people and reunite all His followers.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 9:8 I will encamp around my house against the army, that no one pass through or return; and no oppressor will pass through them any more: for now, I have seen with my eyes.

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!  Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you!  He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Zechariah 9:10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow will be cut off; and He will speak peace to the nations: and His dominion will be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Zechariah 9:14-17 The Lord will be seen over them; and His arrow will flash like lightning; and the Sovereign Lord will blow the trumpet, and will go with whirlwinds of the south.  15 The Lord Almighty will defend them; and they will destroy and overcome with sling stones; and they will drink, and roar as through wine; and they will be filled like bowls, like the corners of the altar.  16 The Lord their God will save them in that day as the flock of His people; for they are like the jewels of a crown, lifted on high over His land.  17 For how great is His goodness, and how great is His beauty!  Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins.

Theme Zechariah 10

The Lord cares.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You care for us, Your sheep (v. 3).

Something to think about

Verse 4-5 speaks of Christ Jesus, the cornerstone, coming from Judah and helping the Israelites. The Messiah strengthened and restored the Israelites (v. 6, 8). He will bring them back from Egypt (v. 10).

Something to experience

One day God will unite all His people. If we’ll stay close to God, His Spirit will enable us to do His will. But if we stray from God’s presence, we will be cut off from His power.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 10:3 My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the male goats; For the Lord Almighty has visited His flock, the house of Judah, and will make them as His majestic horse in the battle.

Zechariah 10:4-5 From Him will come the cornerstone, from Him the nail, from Him the battle bow, from Him every ruler together.  They shall be as mighty men, treading down muddy streets in the battle; and they shall fight, because the Lord is with them; and the riders on horses will be confounded.

Zechariah 10:6 “I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back; for I have mercy on them; and they will be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the Lord their God, and I will hear them.

Zechariah 10:8 I will signal for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them; and they will increase as they have increased.

Zechariah 10:10 I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and there won’t be room enough for them.

Theme Zechariah 11

Shepherds.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You called Zechariah to act out the roles of two different kinds of shepherds.

Something to think about

The first shepherd demonstrated how God would reject His people (the sheep) because they had rejected Him (see v. 4-14).  The second shepherd demonstrated how God would give His people over to evil shepherds (see v. 15-17).

Something to experience

Any time a leader puts trust in his own strength and intelligence and turns his back on God condemnation will be his eventual fate (v. 17).

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 11:17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd who leaves the flock! The sword will be on his arm, and on his right eye. His arm will be completely withered, and his right eye will be totally blinded!”

Theme Zechariah 12

Jerusalem’s enemies.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all nations (v. 3).

Something to think about

Though Judah will be besieged, as well as Jerusalem, You will make Jerusalem an immovable rock (v. 3).  Anyone who tries to move her will injure themselves (v. 3). Jerusalem’s strength will come from the Lord (v. 5).  The Lord will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem (v. 9). A Spirit of grace and supplication will be poured out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem (v. 10).

Something to experience

Now we have the Holy Spirit continually dwelling in us.  It is this Spirit that convicts us of sin, reveals God’s righteousness and judgment to us, and helps us to pray.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 12:3 “It will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the nations. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.”

Zechariah 12:5 “The chieftains of Judah will say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in the Lord Almighty their God.’”

Zechariah 12:9 It will happen in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Zechariah 12:10 I will pour on David’s house, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they will look to Me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

Theme Zechariah 13

Sin.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, a fountain will cleanse the Israelites from sin and impurity (v. 1).

Something to think about

The Lord will get rid of all evil (v. 2). A righteous remnant will be saved (v. 8).

Something to experience

Even when it seems all the world has turned away from the Lord, we need to obey Him (v. 9).

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 13:1 “In that day there will be a spring opened to David’s house and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.”

Zechariah 13:2 “It will come to pass in that day,” says the Lord Almighty, “that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will be remembered no more. I will also cause the prophets and the spirit of impurity to pass out of the land.”

Zechariah 13:8 “It shall happen that in all the land,” says the Lord, “two parts in it will be cut off and die; but the third will be left in it.”

Zechariah 13:9 “I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested.  They will call on My name, and I will hear them.  I will say, ‘It is My people;’ and they will say, ‘the Lord is My God.’”

Theme Zechariah 14

The Messiah’s victory.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, one day You will come and all the holy ones with You (v. 5).

Something to think about

The Lord will fight against those nations who are Jerusalem’s enemies (v. 3).  That day will be unique (v. 7).  That day living water will flow from Jerusalem (v. 8). That day the Lord will be king over the whole earth and that day there will be one Lord, and His name the only name (v. 9).  Jerusalem will be raised up and never again will it be destroyed.  She will be secure (v. 10-11).  There will be a plague that will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem (v. 12).

Something to experience

The Messiah will one day triumph over all the earth and He will reign over His people, of which we are among.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Zechariah 14:3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle.

Zechariah 14:5 You shall flee by the valley of my mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azel; yes, you shall flee, just like you fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. The Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with you.

Zechariah 14:7 It will be a unique day which is known to the Lord; not day, and not night; but it will come to pass, that at evening time there will be light.

Zechariah 14:8 It will happen in that day, that living waters will go out from Jerusalem: half of them toward the eastern sea, and half of them toward the western sea. It will be so in summer and in winter.

Zechariah 14:9 The Lord will be King over all the earth. In that day the Lord will be one, and His name one.

Zechariah 14:10-11 10 All the land will be made like the Arabah, from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem; and she will be lifted up, and will dwell in her place, from Benjamin’s gate to the place of the first gate, to the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananel to the king’s wine presses. 11 Men will dwell therein, and there will be no more curse; but Jerusalem will dwell safely.

Zechariah 14:12 This will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have fought against Jerusalem: their flesh will consume away while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will consume away in their sockets, and their tongue will consume away in their mouth.

Prayer

Lord, I pray we believers will look forward to Your Son, Christ Jesus’ return for us (Zechariah 9). Lord, I pray we will look forward to being united with all Your children.  I pray we will stay close to You so the Holy Spirit will enable us to do Your will (Zechariah 10).  Lord, I pray we will pray for our leaders that they would trust and obey You (Zechariah 11:17).  Lord, I pray we will quickly repent when we sin.  Help us to pray according to Your Word (Zechariah 12).  Lord, I pray we will not turn from Your path.  I pray we will obey You (Zechariah 13:9). Lord, thank You for sending Your Son to save us (Zechariah 14).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
