Psalm 61 Theme

Prayer for security and assurance (v. 1).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, though the psalmist David was probably far from home, he trusted you would hear Him (v. 2).

Something to think about

David knew God was his refuge, a strong tower against his enemies (v.3). David longed to take refuge in the shelter of God’s wings (v. 4). Then David said he would ever sing praise to God’s name (7).

Something to experience

Even when we are among strangers, God never abandons us either.  God’s all-powerful strength is always with us.  Perhaps you and I could find something to praise God for each day, if we’re not already doing so (v. 8).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 61:1  Hear my cry, God.  Listen to my prayer.

Psalm 61:2 From the end of the earth, I will call to You when my heart is overwhelmed.  Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 61:3 For You have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy.

Psalm 61:4 I will dwell in Your tent forever.  I will take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.

Psalm 61:7 He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever.  Appoint Your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.

Psalm 61:8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.

Psalm 62 Theme

Placing all hope in God (v. 1-2).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, we can trust You to rescue us (v. 7-8).

Something to think about

Position, power and riches are not measures to use when determining someone’s character. None of these are of value in God’s eyes.  We are all just a mere breath (v. 9-10).

Something to experience

Position, power and riches may help us get ahead in life, but God values our trust in Him and what we do for Him (v. 11-12).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 62:1-2 1 My soul rests in God alone.  My salvation is from Him.  2He alone is my Rock, my Salvation, and my Fortress.  I will never be greatly shaken.

Psalm 62:7-8 My salvation and my honor is with God.  The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.  Trust in Him at all times, you people.  Pour out your heart before Him.  God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Psalm 62:9-10Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie.  In the balances they will go up.  They are together lighter than a breath. 10 Don’t trust in oppression.  Don’t become vain in robbery.  If riches increase, don’t set your heart on them.

Psalm 62:11-12 11 God has spoken once; twice I have heard this, that power belongs to God.  12 Also to You, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for You reward every man according to his work.

Psalm 63 Theme

A desire for God’s Presence, provision and protection.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, the psalmist David was lonely (v. 1).

Something to think about

David was having a sleepless night (v. 6).  So he turned his thoughts to God (v. 3-4, 7).

Something to experience

When we can’t sleep, perhaps we will turn our sleepless night into a time of reflection, worship and prayer too (v. 8).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 63:1 God, You are my God.  I will earnestly seek You.  My soul thirsts for You. …

Psalm 63:3-4 Because Your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.  So I will bless You while I live.  I will lift up my hands in Your name.

Psalm 63:6 I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.

Psalm 63:7  For you have been my help.  I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 63:8 My soul stays close to you.  Your right hand holds me up.

Psalm 64 Theme

A complaint (v. 1a).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, only You can truly preserve our life (v. 1b).

Something to think about

The words spoken against the psalmist David were painful (v. 2-3).

Something to experience

Words spoken against us can be painful, but if we will trust in God, we can take refuge in Him (v. 10).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 64:1 Hear my voice, God, in my complaint.  Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

Psalm 64:2-3 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the noisy crowd of the ones doing evil; who sharpen their tongue like a sword and aim their arrows, deadly words.

Psalm 64:10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall take refuge in Him.  All the upright in heart shall praise Him!

Psalm 65 Theme

God provides abundantly (v. 4b).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, even in nature You are glorified (v. 5).

Something to think about

God’s character is displayed in nature.  He formed the mountains.  He can still the roaring seas and waves.  He can still the turmoil of the nations.   He makes morning dawn and evening fade. He cares for the land and the water.  He fills the rivers with water.  He provides grain for food.  He sends soft showers and blesses the crops. He causes the grasslands overflow.  He clothes the hills with gladness and the  pastures He covers with flocks. He clothes the valleys with grain. This all shows God’s generosity (v. 6-13).

Something to experience

Seeing God’s abundant giving should make us so grateful to Him (v. 1a).  And encourage us to give to others.

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 65:1Praise waits for You, God, in Zion. …

Psalm 65:5 By awesome deeds of righteousness, You answer us, God of our salvation.  You who are the hope of all the ends of the earth, of those who are far away on the sea.

Psalm 65:6-13 By Your power, You form the mountains, having armed Yourself with strength.  You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.  They also who dwell in faraway places are afraid at Your wonders.  You call the morning’s dawn and the evening with songs of joy.  You visit the earth, and water it.  You greatly enrich it.  The river of God is full of water.  You provide them grain, for so You have ordained it.  10 You drench its furrows.  You level its ridges.  You soften it with showers.  You bless it with a crop.  11 You crown the year with Your bounty.  Your carts overflow with abundance.  12 The wilderness grasslands overflow.  The hills are clothed with gladness.  13 The pastures are covered with flocks.  The valleys also are clothed with grain.  They shout for joy!  They also sing.

Prayer

Lord, I ask You to listen to our prayers (Psalm 61:1).  Lord, I ask You to lead us to a higher elevation (Psalm 61:2).  Thank You Lord for being our Refuge and Strong Tower (Psalm 61:3). Lord, I pray we will experience Your loving kindness and Your truth that they may preserve us (Psalm 61:7).  Lord, I pray we will sing praise to You continually (Psalm 61:8).  Thank You for providing salvation for us (Psalm 62:2).  Lord, I pray we will earnestly seek You (Psalm 63:1).  Lord, I pray we will not fear our enemy, but instead will trust You to preserve our lives (Psalm 64:1). Thank You Lord for providing abundantly for us (Psalm 65:6-13). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.

“May you and I earnestly seek the Lord.” <>< Dona
