Psalm 56 Theme

Trusting God in the midst of fear (v. 3-4).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, there were men fighting proudly against the psalmist David (v. 1-2).

Something to think about

Even in the deepest darkness God could see and was there to help the psalmist (v. 8).

Something to experience

No matter who’s against us, we can trust God to be with us (v. 9).  We need to remember to praise Him (v. 10). And we need not be afraid (v. 11).  And we need to thank God for delivering us so we might walk before Him in the light of life (v. 12-13).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 56:1-2 1 Be merciful to me, God, for man wants to swallow me up.  All day long, he attacks and oppresses me.  My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me.

Psalm 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, I praise His word.  In God, I put my trust.  I will not be afraid.  What can flesh do to me?

Psalm 56:8 You count my wanderings.  You put my tears into your container.  Aren’t they in your book?

Psalm 56:9 Then my enemies shall turn back in the day that I call.  I know this: that God is for me.

Psalm 56:10 In God, I will praise His word.  In the Lord, I will praise His word.

Psalm 56:11 I have put my trust in God.  I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me?

Psalm 56:12-13 12 Your vows are on me, God.  I will give thank offerings to you. 13 For You have delivered my soul from death, and prevented my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

Psalm 57 Theme

Even when troubles come, God sends loving kindness and truth (v. 2-3).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You will quieten us and give us confidence when we face trials.

Something to think about

Verbal abuse can sometimes damage us as badly as physical abuse. The best defense is to be quiet and praise God (v. 7-10).

Something to experience

When suffering comes we should not turn inward in self-pity, or outward in revenge but do as psalmist David did, turn upward to God (v. 11).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 57:1 Be merciful to me, God, be merciful to me, for my soul takes refuge in You.  Yes, in the shadow of Your wings, I will take refuge, until disaster has passed.

Psalm 57:2-3 I cry out to God Most High, to God who accomplishes my requests for me.  He will send from heaven, and save me, He rebukes the one who is pursuing me. Selah.  God will send out His loving kindness and his truth.

Psalm 57:7-10 My heart is steadfast, God.  My heart is steadfast.  I will sing, yes, I will sing praises.  Wake up, my glory! Wake up, lute and harp!  I will wake up the dawn.  I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the peoples.  I will sing praises to you among the nations.  10 For Your great loving kindness reaches to the heavens, and Your truth to the skies.

Psalm 57:11 Be exalted, God, above the heavens.  Let Your glory be over all the earth.

Psalm 58 Theme

A prayer for God’s justice.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, just like now, in David’s time, men in authority were twisting the truth (v. 1-3).

Something to think about

When no justice could be found, David knew to go to God who would judge with complete fairness (v. 10).

Something to experience

We have this same choice.  God loves justice and those who obey Him will experience perfect justice, if not here, in eternity.  There will be a day of reckoning, when God judges everyone fairly (v. 11).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 58:1-3 1 Do you indeed speak righteousness, silent ones?  Do you judge blamelessly, you sons of men? 2No, in your heart you plot injustice.  You measure out the violence of your hands in the earth.  The wicked go astray from the womb. They are wayward as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

Psalm 58:10 The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance.  He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,

Psalm 58:11 so that men shall say, “Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous.  Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth.”

Psalm 59 Theme

Pray and praise for God’s deliverance (v. 1).

 Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, the psalmist David had done no wrong, yet he was being attacked by fierce men (v. 4).

Something to think about

The evildoers who were attacking the psalmist David cursed God as if He couldn’t hear.  But God does hear (v. 7-8).

Something to experience

We must remember that God hears all we say and sees all we do.  He is our Strength and our High Tower (v. 9). God will go before us and will let us see victory (v. 10). And the safest place we can dwell is in God’s constant love (v. 16-17).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, my God. Set me on high from those who rise up against me.

Psalm 59:4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.  Rise up, behold, and help me!

Psalm 59:7 Behold, they spew with their mouth.  Swords are in their lips, “For”, they say, “who hears us?”  But you, Yahweh, laugh at them.  You scoff at all the nations.

Psalm 59:9  Oh, my Strength, I watch for You, for God is my high tower.

Psalm 59:10 My God will go before me with His loving kindness.  God will let me look at my enemies in triumph.

Psalm 59:16-17 16 But I will sing of Your Strength.  Yes, I will sing aloud of Your loving kindness in the morning.  For You have been my High Tower, a Refuge in the day of my distress.  17 To You, my Strength, I will sing praises.  For God is my High Tower, the God of my mercy.

Psalm 60 Theme

Only God can provide real help (v. 11).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, we can trust You to do great things even when a situation seems out of control (v. 3-5).

Something to think about

The psalmist David believed God was rejecting him (v. 1).  God reminded David that He knew about and owned all the cities (v. 6-9).

Something to experience

And when God is ready, He will gain victory over our nation and our enemies too (v. 12).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 60:1 God, you have rejected us.  You have broken us down.  You have been angry. Restore us, again.

Psalm 60:3-5 You have shown Your people hard things.  You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.  You have given a banner to those who fear You,  that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.  So that Your beloved may be delivered, save with Your right hand, and answer us.

Psalm 60:6-9 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “I will triumph.  I will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth.  Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine.  Ephraim also is the defense of My head.  Judah is My scepter.  Moab is My wash basin.  I will throw My sandal on Edom.  I shout in triumph over Philistia.”  Who will bring Me into the strong city?  Who has led Me to Edom?

Psalm 60:11 Give us help against the adversary, for the help of man is vain.

Psalm 60:12 Through God we will do valiantly, for it is He who will tread down our adversaries.

Prayer

Lord be merciful to us, Your children. Lord, I pray, when we are afraid, we will put our trust in You (Psalm 56:1-4). Lord, I know that You are for us (Psalm 56:9). Lord, thank You for delivering our souls from death and allowing us to walk before You (Psalm 56:13).  Lord, I pray we will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings (Psalm 57:1).  Lord, I pray You will send out to us Your loving kindness and truth (Psalm 57:3).  Lord, I pray we will give thanks to You (Psalm 57:9).  Your great loving kindness reaches to the heavens and Your truth to the skies (Psalm 57:10). Lord, I pray You will be exalted above the heavens and Your glory will be over all the earth (Psalm 57:11).  Lord, deliver us from our enemies.  Set us on high from those who rise up against us (Psalm 59:1).  Lord, I ask You to rise up and help us (Psalm 59:4).  Thank You Lord for being our Strength and our High Tower (Psalm 59:9).  Lord, I pray we will sing aloud of Your loving kindness (Psalm 59:16).  Lord, I pray You will give us help against our adversary, for the help of man is vain (Psalm 60:11).   In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
