God is always there to help.

Oh! Wow! Lord, You provide refuge, strength and help in times of trouble (v. 1).

Something to think about

Though God can melt the earth with His voice (v. 6) He will save those who love Him (v. 11). 

Something to experience

We believers do not need to fear (v. 2) for God is on our side (v.7, 11).  And we can be still and know that He is God (v. 10).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes …

Psalm 46:6 The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted His voice and the earth melted.

Psalm 46:7 (& 11) The Lord of Armies is with us.  The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations.  I will be exalted in the earth.”

God is still the true King of this earth (v. 2).

Oh! Wow! Lord, all of the earth belong to You (v. 9b).

Something to think about

God is the King of all the earth (v. 2, 7). God reigns over the nations (v. 8a). God is seated on His holy throne (v. 8b). 

Something to experience 

We, God’s people, should shout joyfully to God (v. 1); sing praises to Him (v. 6); and greatly exalt Him (v. 9c).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 47:1 Oh clap your hands, all you nations.  Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

Psalm 47: 2 For the Lord Most High is awesome.  He is a great King over all the earth.

Psalm 47:6 Sing praises to God! Sing praises!  Sing praises to our King! Sing praises!

Psalm 47:7 For God is the King of all the earth.  Sing praises with understanding.

Psalm 47:8 God reigns over the nations.  God sits on His holy throne.

Psalm 47:9 The princes of the nations are gathered together as the people of the God of Abraham. For the kings of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted!

God’s Presence is our joy, security and salvation.

Oh! Wow! Lord, You are worthy of our praise (v. 1).

Something to think about

God will one day bring justice to this earth (v. 3-6).

Something to experience

We can seek God’s guidance concerning decisions we have to make (v. 9-10, 14).

Psalm 48:3-6 God has shown Himself … as a refuge.  For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together.  … They were dismayed.  They hurried away.  Trembling took hold of them there …

Psalm 48:9-10 We have thought about Your loving kindness, God, in the middle of Your temple.  10 As is Your name, God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth.  Your right hand is full of righteousness.

Psalm 48:14 For this God is our God forever and ever.  He will be our guide even to death.

 Trusting in worldly possessions is futile.

Oh! Wow! Lord, nobody should count on their wealth to save anyone (v. 5-6).

Something to think about

Nobody can redeem the life of another (v. 7). No amount of money can ever be enough (v. 8).

Something to experience

We one day will leave this earth. And what we have will be left behind (v. 10).  God will redeem the souls of us who are believers and receive us into an eternal home (v. 15).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 49:5-6 Why should I fear … when wicked deceivers surround me?  (For they are) those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches …

Psalm 49:7-8 none of them (wicked deceivers) can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.  For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough (for they will not live forever).

Psalm 49:10 For all see that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Psalm 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for He will receive me. Selah.

Oh! Wow! Lord, judgment begins with Your own followers (v. 4).

Something to think about

God judged His people for treating Him lightly (v. 5-7). But encouraged them to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving. And to call on Him in their day of trouble.  And then He would deliver them (v. 14-15).

Something to experience

Are we honoring God with true thanksgiving (v. 23)?

Psalm 50:4 The Lord calls to the heavens above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people:

Psalm 50:5-7 “Gather my saints together to Me, those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.” The heavens shall declare His righteousness, for God Himself is judge. Selah.  “Hear, My people, and I will speak.  Israel, I will testify against you.”

Psalm 50:14-15 14 “Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving.  Pay your vows to the Most High.  15 Call on Me in the day of trouble.  I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.”

Psalm 50:23 “Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies Me, and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.”

Prayer

Lord, You are our Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).  Lord, I pray we will be still and know that You are God (Psalm 46:10).  You, the Lord Most High, are awesome.  You are a great King over all the earth (Psalm 47:2). You are greatly exalted  (Psalm 47:9).  You God are our God forever and ever.  You are our Guide (Psalm 48:14).  Lord we wait for You to judge Your people (Psalm 50:4). The heavens shall declare Your righteousness (Psalm 50:6). Lord, I pray we will call on You in the day of trouble and You will deliver us and we will honor You (Psalm 50:15). Lord, I pray we will glorify You with sacrifices of thanksgiving (Psalm 50:23). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.
