Psalm 31 Theme

Even when we are struggling God is still our only answer.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, the only wise choice is commitment to You (v. 3-5).

Something to think about

In Luke 23:46 as Jesus was dying on the cross he said, “Father, into Your hands I commend my spirit.” Jesus might have been recalling Psalm 31:5.

Something to experience

We, like Jesus, should commit our possessions, our families and our vocations to God. But first we need to commit ourselves to God.

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 31:3-5 For You are my Rock and my Fortress, therefore for Your name’s sake lead me and guide me.  Pluck me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me, for You are my Stronghold.  Into Your hands I commend my spirit.  You redeem me, O Lord, God of truth.

Something to experience

To confess our sin is to agree with God that we have done something sinful and to make the decision to turn from the sinful behavior (v. 5).

Psalm 32:2 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord doesn’t impute iniquity, in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Oh! Wow! Lord, You promise great blessings to us, Your children.

Something to experience:

We can receive His blessings when we seek Him (v. 4, 10); when we cry out to Him (v. 6, 17); when we trust Him (v. 8); when we fear/revere Him (v. 7, 9); when we refrain from lying (v. 13); when we turn from evil, do good and seek peace (v. 14); when we are humble (v. 18); and when we serve Him (v. 22).

A  prayer to God for help against those who try to inflict injury for no reason.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You will stand against those who attack us for no reason.

Something to think about

This psalm may seem harsh.  But men were unjustly seeking to harm the psalmist (v. 1).

Something to experience

When this happens to us, we need God’s help too (v. 18).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 35:1 Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me.  Fight against those who fight against me.

Psalm 35:18 I will give You thanks in the great assembly. I will praise You among many people.  Don’t let them gloat over me.
