Psalm 116 Theme

A thankful response to God (v. 1).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, You turn Your ear to listen when we call to You (v. 2).

Something to think about

God is always ready to hear because He is gracious and righteous and merciful (v. 4-5). God protects the simplehearted (v. 6).

Something to experience

God stays close to us even in death.  If someone you love is nearing death, don’t become angry and feel God has abandoned them.  Believers are precious to God and He carefully chooses the time when they will be called into His Presence.

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 116:1 I love the Lord, because He listens to my voice, and my cries for mercy.

Psalm 116:2 Because He has turned His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.

Psalm 116:4-5 Then I called on the Lord’s name: “O Lord, I beg You, deliver my soul.”  The Lord is gracious and righteous.  Yes, our God is merciful.

Psalm 116:6 The Lord preserves the simple.  I was brought low, and He saved me.

Psalm 116:15 Precious in the Lord’s sight is the death of His saints.

Something to think about

God’s faithfulness endures forever (v. 2b).

Something to experience

God loves us (John 3:16) and He wishes for none to perish (II Peter 3:9). All people of all nations should praise God (v. 2c)

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 117:1 Praise the Lord, all you nations!  Extol Him, all you nations!

Psalm 117:2 For His loving kindness is great toward us, the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord!

Psalm 118 Theme

Trusting God above anyone else (v. 8-9).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, Your loving kindness endures forever (v. 1-4).

Something to think about

Look to God for help not man (v. 5-7).

Something to experience

In the Lord’s name we can have victory (v. 10-13).  Because the Lord is our Strength, our Song and our Salvation (v. 14). Make it a habit to give thanks to the Lord each day (v. 21, 28-29).  Make it a habit to rejoice and be glad each day (v. 24).

Scriptures to hide in your heart

Psalm 118:1-4 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His loving kindness endures forever.  Let Israel now say that His loving kindness endures forever. Let the house of Aaron now say that His loving kindness endures forever.  Now let those who fear the Lord say that His loving kindness endures forever.

Psalm 118:5-7 Out of my distress, I called on the Lord.  The Lord answered me with freedom.  The Lord is on my side. I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side among those who help me. Therefore, I will look in triumph at those who hate me.

Psalm 118:8-9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord, than to put confidence in man.  It is better to take refuge in the Lord, than to put confidence in princes.

Psalm 118:10-13 10 All the nations surrounded me, but in the Lord’s name, I cut them off.  11 They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me.  In the Lord’s name I indeed cut them off. 12 They surrounded me like bees.  They are quenched like the burning thorns.  In the Lord’s name I cut them off.  13 You pushed me back hard, to make me fall, but the Lord helped me.

Psalm 118:14 the Lord is my Strength and Song.  He has become my Salvation.

Psalm 118:21 I will give thanks to You, for you have answered me, and have become my Salvation.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made.  We will rejoice and be glad in it!

Psalm 118:28-29 28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to You.  You are my God, I will exalt You.  29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His loving kindness endures forever.
