In Judges 9 Abimelech (Gideon’s son) decided to usurp, that is take illegally, the position of Israel’s king which was reserved for God alone.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord some people are just not called to be in positions of power or leadership.

Something to think about

In Abimelech’s selfish quest to be king, He killed all but one of his 70 half-brothers.  People with selfish desires often seek to fulfill them in ruthless ways.

Something to experience

You and I should examine our own ambitions to see if they are self-centered or God-centered.  We should be sure we always fulfill our desires in ways that God would approve.  We should examine our faith and make sure it’s genuine.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will worship You with the right heart attitude.  I pray we will be devoted to You (Jeremiah 12:3). I pray we will examine ourselves and cleanse our heart from unwarranted doubt concerning Your faithfulness.  I pray we will learn to value Your values (Jeremiah 15:19). I pray we will seek and submit to Your will (Luke 1:17).  I pray we will not seek to please ourselves but to please You and the needy among us (Hebrews 13:16).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.

In Judges 11 Jephthah made a rash vow to the Lord.  The vow was if the Lord would give the Ammonites into Jephthah’s hands, Jephthah would give to God whatever came out of his door to meet him when he (Jephthah) returned in triumph (Judges 11:30-31).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You take promises very serious.

Something to think about

Jephthah probably thought it would be an animal but instead it was his only child, his daughter.  Because of his rash vow his daughter would never get married and bare children that would have been Jephthah’s grandchildren.

Something to experience

You and I should be very careful when making promises (vows) to anyone.  But especially to God because He takes promises (vows) very serious.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will consider careful any promises we make to others or You.  I pray our promises will be in line with Your Word.  Thank You Lord for the promises You make to us.  Every promise or vow You’ve made has been or will be fulfilled according to Your Word (II Corinthians 1:20).  Lord, Your Word and Your Promises are pure (Psalm 12:6). Lord thank You for being upright and faithful to Your promises.  Thank You for being our Rock (Psalm 92:15).  Lord I ask You to renew and strengthen us according to the promises in Your Word (Psalm 119:28). Lord I pray we will put our hope in Your promises being fulfilled in our life (Romans 5:5). Lord I pray You will fill us with joy and peace.  I pray we will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in Your promises (Romans 15:13).  Lord thank You for promising us eternal life if we confess our sins, turn from evil and live according to Your will (I John 1:9).   In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
