Theme Hosea 4

Sinfulness of Israel.

Oh! Wow! Lord, You charged Israel with much sin (v. 1-2a).

Something to think about

Israel’s sinful behavior brought increased violence and an ecological crisis upon Israel (v. 2b-3).  The Lord said His people lacked knowledge (v. 6).  The more the people sinned, the more the priest received (v. 8).  Because of their prostitution the women didn’t bear children (v. 10). They were lead astray and were unfaithful to God (v. 12). Though Israel would be punished, Judah would be spared if she didn’t follow Israel’s example (v. 15).

Something to experience

If we find our behavior has caused negative consequences in our life and in the lives of others we must change our ways by asking God for help.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Hosea 4:1-21 Hear the Lord’s word, you children of Israel; for the Lord has a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.  There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break boundaries, and bloodshed causes bloodshed.”

Hosea 4:3 “Therefore the land will mourn, and everyone who dwells in it will waste away, with all living things in her, even the animals of the field and the birds of the sky; yes, the fish of the sea also die.”

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to Me.  Because you have forgotten your God’s law, I will also forget your children.”

Hosea 4:10 “They will eat, and not have enough.  They will play the prostitute, and will not increase; because they have abandoned giving to the Lord.”

Hosea 4:12 “My people consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood.  Indeed the spirit of prostitution has led them astray, and they have been unfaithful to their God.”

Hosea 4:15 “Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet don’t let Judah offend; and don’t come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth Aven, nor swear, ‘As the Lord lives.’”

Theme Hosea 5

Israel is judged.

Oh! Wow! Lord, the Israelites had no leaders they could trust (v. 1).

Something to think about

Both the civil and religious leaders of Hosea’s time were hopelessly corrupt (v. 1-2). They were deliberately choosing to sin (v. 4-5). The Lord withdrew Himself from the Israelites (v. 6). Because they were unfaithful to the Lord (v. 7).  Israel turned to Assyria for help but nobody could save them because God Himself had already decided to judge the nation of Israel (v. 13-14).  The Lord said He would wait on them to seek Him (v. 15).

Something to experience

Even today we have leaders we should not trust because they are corrupt. We should stay far from their sin.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Hosea 5:1“Listen to this, you priests!  Listen, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king!  For the judgment is against you; for you have been a snare at Mizpah, and a net spread on Tabor.”

Hosea 5:2 “The rebels are deep in slaughter; but I discipline all of them.”

Hosea 5:4-5 Their deeds won’t allow them to turn to their God; for the spirit of prostitution is within them, and they don’t know the Lord.  The pride of Israel testifies to his face.  Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them.

Hosea 5:6 They will go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the Lord; but they won’t find Him.  He has withdrawn Himself from them.

Hosea 5:7 They are unfaithful to the Lord; for they have borne illegitimate children.  Now the new moon will devour them with their fields.

Hosea 5:13-14 “When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, Then Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to king Jareb: but he is not able to heal you, neither will he cure you of your wound.  14 For I will be to Ephraim like a lion, and like a young lion to the house of Judah.  I Myself will tear in pieces and go away.  I will carry off, and there will be no one to deliver.”

Hosea 5:15 “I will go and return to My place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek My face.  In their affliction they will seek Me earnestly.”

Theme Hosea 6

Oh! Wow! Lord, Israel wasn’t being sincere with their repentance (v. 1-3).

Something to think about

God recognized that Israel wasn’t being sincere (v. 4). God wanted Israel to acknowledge Him (v. 6).  Israel had broken their covenant with God (v. 7). There would be an appointed time for Judah too (v. 11).

Something to experience

When we repent, we need to make changes that will keep us from repeating that sin.  We need to have a deep and sincere loyalty to God and back it up with action. We need to serve God with all our being.

Scripture to hide in your heart

Hosea 6:1-3 “Come! Let’s return to the Lord; for He has torn us to pieces, and He will heal us; He has injured us, and He will bind up our wounds.  After two days He will revive us.  On the third day He will raise us up, and we will live before Him.  Let’s acknowledge the Lord.  Let’s press on to know the Lord.  As surely as the sun rises, the Lord will appear.  He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.”

Hosea 6:4 “Ephraim, what shall I do to you?  Judah, what shall I do to you?  For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.”

Hosea 6:6 “For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”

Hosea 6:7 “But they, like Adam, have broken the covenant.  They were unfaithful to Me, there.”

Hosea 6:11“Also, Judah, there is a harvest appointed for you, when I restore the fortunes of My people.”

Lord, help us to quickly see when we’ve sinned, so we can turn, repent and be forgiven (Hosea 4).  Lord, I pray we will faithfully follow You (Hosea 5).  Lord, help us to focus and change the things that are displeasing to You (Hosea 6).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
