Genesis 27 tells the story of two brothers, Esau and Jacob, who might have had a better relationship with each other and with their parents if their parents, Isaac and Rebekah had not shown favoritism.

Response

“Oh! Wow!” Isaac and Rebecca showed favoritism toward their sons.

Something to think about

Esau became angry and decided he would kill his brother Jacob because of his father’s blessing over Jacob. Rebekah decided to send Jacob to live with her brother Laban in Haran until Esau was no longer angry.

Something to experience

As parents we may sometimes favor one of our children over the other. This can lead to conflicts between our children and between our children and us.

Prayer

Lord I pray we as parents will seek to love our children equally.  Your Word says for us to raise our children to follow the right path in life (Proverbs 22:6).  Lord I ask You to bless our children with Your kind and encouraging Word (Mark 10:13-16).  I pray all our loved ones will seek a relationship with You.  I pray they will be heirs of Your kingdom and fellow heirs with Your Son Christ Jesus (Romans 8:17). Lord I pray we will not provoke our loved ones to anger.  I pray we will not exasperate them to the point of resentment because we’re demanding unreasonable, humiliating or abusive actions.  I pray we will not show favoritism or indifference to them. I pray we will treat our loved ones with tenderness and lovingkindness as we help them to obey and do Your will (Ephesians 6:4).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.

Genesis 28-29 It was decided by Isaac and Rebekah that Jacob should take a wife from among Rebekah’s family. On his way to Padden Aram, Jacob had a dream that lead him to make a vow to God.

Response

“Oh! Wow!” Lord, Jacob chose to follow You.

Something to think about

God can take our life in whatever direction He desires. Jacob decided to take God as His God.

Something to experience

That is God’s will for each of us.

Prayer

Lord no matter what our past looks like, I pray we will trust You to turn it around for good. I ask You to help each of us to choose to follow You (Romans 8:28). In Your Son Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.
