In Genesis 19:17-23 Lot and his family are encouraged to leave Sodom.

Response

“Oh! Wow!” Lord, You sent two angels to get Lot and his family safely out of Sodom.

Something to think about

God in His mercy sent visitors to bring Lot and his family safely out of the sinful city in which they lived.  Lot and his family were told in verse 17 to escape to the mountains or evil could consume them.  Lot requested instead to stay in the plains (a little above Sodom and Gomorrah’s elevation) and not go into the mountains (a higher elevation).

Something to experience

Don’t allow your surroundings to shape you, rather shape your surroundings. Do those who know you see you as a witness for God or are you just one of the crowd, blending in unnoticed?

Prayer

Lord when we are called to come out of a certain situation I pray we will understand that You are really calling us into a closer walk with You. Indeed Your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9).  I pray where You lead we will follow.  I pray we will not stop until we reach the destination You’ve chosen for us.  I pray we will call out to You when we are overwhelmed by our circumstances.  I ask You to lead us to a higher understanding, a higher elevation (Psalm 61:2). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

In Genesis 19:24-26 Lot and his family just reached the town of Zoar when the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. In verse 26 we are told that Lot’s wife looked back even though she was told not to in verse 17.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord, as a result of looking back, Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt.

Something to think about

It may seem like a harsh treatment.  But God knew Lot’s wife’s heart.  Lot’s wife may have been longing for what she had just left behind.  So she wasn’t fixing her eyes on the future God could give her.

Something to experience

I know I can’t be a good witness of what God’s done in my life if I’m looking back and longing for my sinful past. Doing that is like dragging a dead body around with me. If I’ve accepted Christ Jesus into my life I’m a new creation. Are you being a good witness for God?

Prayer

Lord I pray we will be salt that flavors this world we now live in.  I pray we will never lose our flavor as Lot’s wife did.  I pray we will be light to this world and shine for all to see (Matthew 5:13-16).  Lord thank You for searching our heart and truly knowing us (Psalm 139:1). I ask You to continually search us and know our thoughts.  I ask You to convict us if you find any wicked way in us.  I ask You to lead us in Your way (Psalm 139:23-24).  I pray we will put our total trust in Your Son Christ Jesus so we will indeed be new creations.  I pray old things in our life will pass away and all things in our life will become new (II Corinthians 5:17). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

In Genesis 19:27-29 Abraham looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah and saw dense smoke rising from the land.

Response

“Oh! Wow!” Lord, You remembered Abraham and saved his nephew Lot.

Something to think about

Abraham’s prayer (his request to God in Genesis 18:23-32) was answered far better than he requested.  Though there were not ten righteous men found, God saved Lot and his family anyway.

Something to experience:

Sometimes we pray (actually tell God) what we want to happen but God has a far better plan.   Our view of the situation may be short sighted, but God sees the complete situation.  There are some people who do not want to follow God and God forces no one.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will continually remind ourselves that You wish for no one to perish but all to repent and be saved (II Peter 3:9).  Lord I thank You that You have good plans for us.  They are plans of peace and not evil.  They are plans to give us hope and a future.  I pray we will call on You and listen to You.  I pray we will seek You with all our heart for then Your Word says we will find You (Jeremiah 29:11-13). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

In Genesis 19:30-38 Lot’s two daughters become pregnant.

Response

Lot’s daughters probably acted out of desperation.  They were probably attempting to preserve their family line. Their behavior was as sinful as what had been going on in Sodom though (see Leviticus 18:6).

Something to think about

We too make be more likely to sin when we are desperate for what we feel we must have.

Something to experience

We shouldn’t let desperation lead us to do something that is sin.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will understand and obey Your Word.  Thank You for giving us Your Word to teach us, to reproof us, to correct us and to instruction us in the right way to live (II Timothy 3:16-17). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.
