“Are you ready to go on an adventure with me?”  <>< Dona (01/01/20)

Then read Genesis chapter 1.   And get your paper and pen ready to record all the “Oh! Wow!” moments.

Genesis 1 verses 1-2 1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You created the heavens and the earth.

Something to experience

Go to a window. Look up at the heavens and look down at the earth.  You’re looking only at a very small part of the heavens and the earth God created.

Prayer

Lord thank You for creating the heavens and the earth.  Thank You for bringing them into existence.  I ask You to hover over us and hear our response to Your creation. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 3-5  God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light “day”, and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke light into existence.

Something to think about

God spoke things into existence.  Did you know – though we can’t speak things into existence as God did – we can cause things to happen with our words?  I’ll not linger but according to Proverbs 18:21 what we say can preserve life or destroy it; so we need to be careful what we say.  Also see Proverbs 18:4, 6-8, 13 and Revelation 12:11 for more about the words we speak.

Something to experience

Go into a totally dark room. Experience the darkness.  Then turn on the light. (F.Y.I.  When I did this exercise, I did it quickly. I don’t like darkness in any form.)

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking light into existence.  Thank You for dividing the light from the darkness.  Thank You for giving us day and night. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 6-8 God said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. God called the expanse “sky”. There was evening and there was morning, a second day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke the sky into existence.

Something to think about

This passage is interesting but I’m going to try and stay focused.  Though if you have time you might like to read other translations (CEB, CJB, GNT, OJB, and NIV) to help you understand “expanse.”  The above mentioned translations refer to the expanse as either a dome or vault. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether you have time to investigate this.

Something to experience

Go to a window and look out.  Linger just a moment or two.    Notice the color of the sky.  Look for clouds.

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking the sky into existence. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 9-13  God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;” and it was so. 10 God called the dry land “earth”, and the gathering together of the waters he called “seas”. God saw that it was good. 11 God said, “Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in it, on the earth;” and it was so. 12 The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with their seeds in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke the bodies of waters and the dry land into existence.  You spoke the earth and the seas into existence.  You spoke vegetation into existence.

Something to experience

If you can see a body of water from your home, take a few moments to look at it.  If you are land locked, take a few moments to view the land around you. Notice the trees, the flowers, and other plants.

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking the bodies of waters and the dry land into existence. Thank You for speaking the earth and the seas into existence. Thank You for speaking vegetation into existence.  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 14-19  14 God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs to mark seasons, days, and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke the sun, the moon and the stars into existence.

Something to experience

If it is daytime, step outside and feel the warmth of the sun.  If it is nighttime step outside.  Search out the moon and the stars.  Take time some morning and watch the sun rise.  Or take time some evening and watch the sun set.

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking the sun, the moon and the stars into existence to separate the day from the night. Lord thank You for sunrises and particularly sunsets, for one was the inspiration for starting this adventure with You and Your Word.  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 20-23 20 God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21 God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke the water creatures and the birds into existence.

Something to experience

If you live near water perhaps you can spot a duck swimming.  And even though it is winter perhaps a bird can be spotted in the sky whether you’re near water or not.

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking the water creatures and birds into existence.  Thank You for speaking fruitfulness into their life. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 24-25 24 God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so. 25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You spoke the livestock, the creeping things and the animals of all kind into existence.

Something to experience

If you have a pet, perhaps right now you could go pet him or her. We don’t have any pets.   Perhaps you don’t have a pet either, but think about all the pleasure they bring to those who do. I can remember how happy my daughter was to have her pets when she was young.  They were such a comfort to her.

Prayer

Lord thank You for speaking the livestock, the creeping things and the animals of all kind into existence.  Thank You for not just speaking a few animals but a multitude into existence. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 26-30 26 God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food. 30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;” and it was so.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord you created humans to have dominion over all You created. You created food for both humans and animals.

Something to experience

Go to your kitchen.  Open first your fridge and view all the food.  Then go to the pantry and do the same. View the food available to you. How about your counter tops?  View the food on them – bread, fruit, coffee, etc.

Prayer

Lord thank You for creating males and females in Your own image. Thank You for speaking to us to be fruitful, to multiply, to fill the earth and to subdue it.  Thank You for giving us dominion over the fishes, the birds and the living things that move on the earth.  Thank You for providing all of us with food. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

Genesis 1 verses 31 31 God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord You created so much in just six days.

Something to experience

Just before He created male and female, God thought everything else He had created was good (see verses 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25).  Then once He created humans He spoke verse 31 – “it was very good.” Perhaps we were icing on the cake for our Creator.  Meditate on that.

Prayer

Lord thank You for creating all You created in six days. In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.

“I hope your visit here today was oh wow worthy.”
