Psalms From David’s Life

There are about 70 Psalms that attribute David as the author.  Here are 12 which refer to events in David’s life.

Psalm 3

During Absalom’s rebellion against David (see II Samuel 15).

David learned: From the Lord comes deliverance (Psalm 3:8).

Psalm 7

During Absalom’s rebellions against David (see II Samuel 15). 

David learned: God is a righteous God who searches minds and hearts and can bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure (Psalm 7:9).   

Psalm 18

When Saul stopped pursuing David (see II Samuel 22).

David learned: To those who are faithful God shows Himself faithful (Psalm 18:25).

Psalm 34

While David was running from Saul (see I Samuel 21).

David learned: He should glorify the Lord at all times (Psalm 34:1).

Psalm 51

After being confronted about his adultery with Bathsheba (see II Samuel 12).

David learned: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart God will not despise (Psalm 51:17).

Psalm 52

After David learned that Doeg had murdered 85 priests and their families (see I Samuel 22).

David learned: God will bring evil people down to everlasting ruin (Psalm 52:5).

Psalm 54

When the Ziphites tried to betray David (see I Samuel 23).

David learned: Surely God was his help (Psalm 54:4).

Psalm 56

While David was running from Saul (see I Samuel 21).

David learned: When he was afraid, he needed to trust in God (Psalm 56:3).

Psalm 57

While David was hiding in a cave (see I Samuel 24).

David learned: He could take refuge in the shadow of God’s wings until the disaster had passed (Psalm 57:1).

Psalm 59

When Saul sent men to David’s home to kill him (I Samuel 19).

David learned: God was his fortress (Psalm 59:9, 16, 17).

Psalm 63

While David was hiding in the Desert of En Gedi (see I Samuel 24).

David learned: His soul could cling to God; God’s right hand would uphold him (Psalm 63:8).

Psalm 142

When David was hiding in the cave of Adullam (see I Samuel 22).

David learned: God was his refuge (Psalm 142:5).
