WHERE CAN WISDOM BE FOUND?

Lot and his friends differed on where wisdom came from.

Eliphaz thought wisdom came by observing and experiencing life.  He based his advice to Job on his confident, firsthand knowledge (see Job 4:8; 5:3, 27). His attitude toward God was (something like) “I have personally observed how God works and have figured Him out.”

Bildad thought wisdom was inherited from the past.  Trustworthy knowledge is secondhand.  He based his advice to Job on traditional proverbs and sayings that he frequently quoted (see Job 8:8-9; 18:5-21).  His attitude toward God was (something like) “Those who have gone before us figured God out and all we have to do is use that knowledge.”

Zophar thought wisdom belonged to the wise.  He based his advice on his wisdom that had no other source than himself (see Job 11:6; 20:1-29). His attitude toward God was (something like) “The wise know what God is like, but there aren’t many of us around.”

Job thought God was the source of wisdom, and the first step toward wisdom was to fear God (see Job 28:20-28).  His attitude toward God was (something like) “God reveals His wisdom to those who humbly trust Him.”
