In Joshua 7 the Israelites are defeated by the men of Ai (verses 4-5).

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord the Israelites didn’t obey the instructions You gave them.

Something to think about

The Israelites were defeated because they acted unfaithfully in regard to some items that they took from Jericho.  God had told them not to take the devoted items (Joshua 6:18).

Something to experience

When we experience defeat, we too should turn to God for direction and help (verse 6-10). Like Joshua and the elders we should humble ourselves before the Lord so that we will be able to hear His Words.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will repent when we realize we’ve sinned against You. I pray we will turn from our sinful way of thinking.  And live our life in a way that proves we’ve repented.  I pray we will seek Your purpose for our life (Matthew 3:2).  Lord I pray we will make amends to You and others affected by our sinful behavior (Matthew 5:23-24).

In Joshua 9 Joshua and the men of Israel were deceived.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord making promises or taking an oath is serious business with You.

Something to think about

A group of people deceived the Israelites into believing they were from a very distant country.  So Joshua made a treaty of peace with them without inquiring of the Lord.  A short time later they found out who the people really were – Gibeonites who lived nearby.

Something to experience

We too may decide on a course of action without seeking God’s direction.  God takes oaths very serious.  So we need to be sure before we make a promise that all information is correct concerning both parties.

Prayer

Lord I pray we will have clean hands and a pure heart.  I pray we will not life up our soul to what is false.  I pray we will not swear oaths deceitfully (Psalm 24:4). In Christ Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN.
