Numbers 20:1-13 The Israelites gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron because there was no water for the community.

Response

Oh! Wow! Lord the Israelites’ memory was short.  You had already provided for them numerous times. And You were more than able to do so again.

Something to think about

Moses did not follow God’s instructions exactly. To the Israelites it might have looked like Moses was taking partial credit for providing water (see Numbers 20:10-11Moses said to them “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with this staff.  Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank). God’s exact words to Moses (verse 8) were “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together.  Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.  You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”  God didn’t tell Moses to hit the rock which is what Moses did. God told Moses and Aaron in (verse 12) “Because you did not trust Me enough to honor Me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”  Notes from my Bible: Moses was the leader and model for the entire nation.  Because of this great responsibility to the people, he could not be let off lightly.  By striking the rock, Moses disobeyed God’s direct command and dishonored God in the presence of His people.

Something to experience

Do I ever disrespect God by thinking, saying, or doing something that contadicts His Word?

Prayer

Lord I pray we will neither disobey nor dishonor You. Lord I pray the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart will be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight.  Thank You for being our firm, immovable Rock and our Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).  Lord I pray we will walk in a manner that brings honor to You. I pray we will please You in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing in the knowledge of You.  I pray we will exhibit deeper faith, clearer insight and fervent love for Your precepts (Colossians 1:10).  Lord I pray we will pursue a life of purpose and live in a way that expresses gratitude to You for our salvation (I Thessalonians 4:1). Lord I pray we be dedicated and set apart by behavior that pleases You whether we’re in public or in private situations (I Thessalonians 4:7).  Lord I pray we will faithfully walk with You and please You with our thoughts, our words and our actions (Hebrews 11:6).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
