Rules For Holy Living

Colossians 3:1-17 (WEB) 1 If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.  Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. For these things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. You also once walked in those, when you lived in them; but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. 9 Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings, 10 and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator, 11 where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, or free person; but Christ is all, and in all.  12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.  14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord. 17 Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

HEAR the WORD

Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life in now hidden with Christ in God.

MEDITATE on the WORD

Ponder the verse above.  What does it mean “for you died”? My Bible notes: “For you died” means that we (believers) should have as little desire for this world as a dead person would have.

MEMORIZE the WORD

Colossians 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:3-4 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

LOVE and LIVE the WORD

We should set our hearts on things above which means striving to put heaven’s priorities into daily practice (Colossians 3:1).

TEACH and SHARE the WORD

We should seek to always tell the truth to everyone (Colossians 3:9).

PRAY the WORD

Lord, I pray we will set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at Your right hand (Colossians 3:1).  I pray we will set our minds on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2).  Lord, I pray we put to death whatever belongs to the earthly nature (Colossians 3:5).  Lord, I pray we will rid ourselves of all sin (Colossians 3:9).  Lord, I pray we will clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Colossians 3:12).  Lord, I pray we will bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances we may have with one another (Colossians 3:13).  Lord, I pray over all these virtues we will put on love which binds godly virtues  together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:14).  Lord, I pray we will let Christ’s peace rule in our hearts (Colossians 3:15).  Lord, I pray Christ’s Word will dwell in us richly as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as we sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts to You (Colossians 3:16).  Lord, I pray whatever we do, whether in word or deed, we will do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to You through Him (Colossians 3:17).  Lord, I pray we parents and children will obey You (Colossians 3:18-22).  Lord, I pray whatever we do, we will work with it with all our heart as working for You and not man (Colossians 3:23-25).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
