Children Of Darkness And Children Of Light

Ephesians 5:1-21 (WEB) 1 Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints; nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate, but rather giving of thanks.  Know this for sure, that no sexually immoral person, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.  Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience. Therefore don’t be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, 10 proving what is well pleasing to the Lord. 11 Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things, when they are reproved, are revealed by the light, for everything that reveals is light. 14 Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”  15 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father; 21 subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

Wives and Husbands

Ephesians 5:22-33 (WEB) 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being Himself the Savior of the body. 24 But as the assembly is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their own husbands in everything.  25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave Himself up for it; 26 that He might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present the assembly to Himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect. 28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself. 29 For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly; 30 because we are members of His body, of His flesh and bones. 31 “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly. 33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Questions and Answers:

1. To whom are wives to be subject (Ephesians 5:22)? Wives are to be subject to their own husband, as to the Lord.

2. Who is the head of the wife and who is head of the assembly (Ephesians 5:23)? The husband is the head of the wife and Christ is the head of the assembly (church). Christ is the Savior of the body.

3. Who is subject to Christ and who is subject to their own husband (Ephesians 5:24)? The assembly (church) is subject to Christ.  And wives are to be subject to their own husbands in everything.

4. How are husbands to love their wives (Ephesians 5:25)? Husbands are to love their wives, even as Christ loved the assembly (church) and gave Himself up for it.

5. Why did Christ do this (Ephesians 5:26-27)? Christ loved the assembly (church) and gave Himself up for it so that He might sanctify it, by cleansing it by the washing of water with the Word.  So that He might present the church to Himself, not having spot or wrinkle but for the church to be holy and without defect.

6. What should husbands do (Ephesians 5:28-29)? Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies.  For he who loves his own wife loves himself.

Ephesians 5:14 (WEB) Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

MEDITATE on the WORD

Ponder the verse above.  My Bible notes: Paul was appealing to the Ephesians to wake up and realize the dangerous condition into which some of them had been slipping.

MEMORIZE the WORD

Ephesians 5:17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

LOVE and LIVE the WORD

I purpose to show respect for my husband who loves me.

TEACH and SHARE the WORD

I purpose to share this message with other wives.

PRAY the WORD

Lord, I pray we will be imitators of You and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to You (Ephesians 5:1-2).  Lord, I pray there will not be a hint of sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking in our life (Ephesians 5:3-4a).  Lord, I pray we will be thankful (Ephesians 5:4b). Lord, I pray we will stay away from those who deceive with their words (Ephesians 5:5-7). Lord, I pray we will live as children of light (Ephesians 5:8). Lord, I pray we will find out what pleases You and obey it (Ephesians 5:9-10).  Lord, I pray we will be very careful how we live and be wise and make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15-16).  Lord, I ask You to help us understand Your will (Ephesians 5:17).  Lord, I pray we will be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).  Lord, I pray we will speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.  Singing and making music in our heart to You (Ephesians 5:19).  Lord, I pray we will always give thanks to You for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20). Lord, I pray we will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21).  Lord, I pray we who are wives will submit to our husband as to You.  For Your Word says the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:22-24).  Lord, I pray husbands and wives will understand submission in the way You have ordained it (Ephesians 5:25-33).   In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
