Jesus Is Asked To Perform A Miracle

Matthew 12:38-45 (KJV) 38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from Thee.  39 But He answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.  41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.  42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.  43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.  44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.  45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Jesus Describes His True Family

Matthew 12:46-50 (KJV) 46 While He yet talked to the people, behold, His mother and His brethren stood without, desiring to speak with Him.  47 Then one said unto Him, Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with Thee.  48 But He answered and said unto him that told Him, Who is My mother? and who are My brethren?  49 And He stretched forth His hand toward His disciples, and said, Behold My mother and My brethren!  50 For whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in heaven, the same is My brother, and sister, and mother.

Mark 3:31-35 (KJV) 31 There came then His brethren and His mother, and, standing without, sent unto Him, calling Him.  32 And the multitude sat about Him, and they said unto Him, Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren without seek for Thee.  33 And He answered them, saying, Who is My mother, or My brethren? 34 And He looked round about on them which sat about Him, and said, Behold My mother and My brethren!  35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is My brother, and My sister, and mother.

Luke 8:19-21 (KJV) 19 Then came to Him His mother and His brethren, and could not come at Him for the press.  20 And it was told Him by certain which said, Thy mother and Thy brethren stand without, desiring to see Thee.  21 And He answered and said unto them, My mother and My brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

1. Why wouldn’t Jesus give the Pharisees a miraculous sign (Matthew 12:38-39)? My Bible notes: The Pharisees were not sincerely seeking to know Jesus.  And they had already seen enough miraculous proof to convince them that Jesus was the Messiah.  They refused though to open their hearts to Jesus.  And more miracles wouldn’t have changed that.

2. What Old Testament story did Jesus give as a future sign of His death and resurrection (Matthew 12:39-40)? The story of Jonah who spent three days and three nights in the belly of a whale.

3. What do you believe Jesus was trying to explain in Matthew 12:42-45? Just cleaning up (emptying out) our life of current sin is not enough.  We need to fill it up with God’s Word and the Holy Spirit.  If left empty our life will be an easy target for satan to come in and fill with even worse sins.

HEAR the WORD

Matthew 12:48-50 (AMP) 48 But Jesus replied to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples [and all His other followers], He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven [by believing in Me, and following Me] is My brother and sister and mother.”

MEDITATE on the WORD

I believe this particular translation above helped me understand what Jesus was actually saying.  I don’t believe Jesus was denying His biological family.  I believe He was inviting in His adopted family, that is all His followers. What do you believe?

MEMORIZE the WORD

Matthew 12:50 NIV “For whosoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”  (spoken by Jesus)

LOVE and LIVE the WORD

If we’re part of Jesus’ family then it should lead us to love everyone.

TEACH and SHARE the WORD

We need to seek out those people who are not yet in God’s family and tell them Jesus has invited all of us to join His family.

PRAY the WORD

Lord, I pray we will look at everything around us as a miracle from You.  I pray we will seek to join Your family and do Your will (Matthew 12:50).  In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.  AMEN.
